The Press Club Serving the Philadelphia Suburbs will present legendary entertainer Charlie Gracie as well as a Meet and Greet with the new Delaware County Council at its February Meeting. The luncheon will be held 12 noon Wed. (Feb. 15) at Harrah’s Chester Racetrack and Casino in the Cove Restaurant and it is open to the public. The luncheon is being sponsored by the Spirit Media Group and Delaware County Historical Society. Registration opens at 11:30 am.
Gracie is an American rock and roll pioneer and singer who has headlined some of the biggest venues of these times, including Alan Freed's rock and roll shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, and the 500 Club in Atlantic City. He appeared in the 1957 film Jamboree and has toured with Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, Van Morrison, Eddie Cochran and many others.
Beatle George Harrison referred to Gracie's guitar technique as 'brilliant' in a March 1996 interview with Billboard magazine and Beatle Paul McCartney invited Gracie to the premiere party of his 1999 release which paid tribute to the early pioneers of rock music.
Charlie's star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage.
Today, Charlie is still doing what he loves best. His reputation among his peers as a stellar, multi-faceted singer and musician is such that world famous rock stars regularly pay him tribute and volunteer to work with him. Locally, Gracie will be a headliner at this year’s Italian American Heritage Festival June 3 in Rose Tree Park.
In addition to Gracie, Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle will introduce the 2012 Councilmembers, including Mario Civera, Jr., Colleen Morrone, John McBlain and David White.
Representatives of the Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) will also be present to introduce some of the artists whose works are part of this month’s Black History exhibit at the DCHS exhibit at its museum in Chester.
